History Of Essential Oils

David's Harp -TombEssential oils have been used by humans for thousands of years and have long been said to have a multitude of benefits. Everything from anxiety to loss of memory to difficulty sleeping is treatable by essential oils, which are natural aromatic compounds found in plants. The oils provide plants with protection against predators and disease and play a role in plant pollination, and they have lots of benefits for humans too. But essential oils need to be used safely to be effective.
Essential oils can be used in a number of ways, but direct application onto skin is unsuitable for the majority of oils. Lavender and tea tree are the only two which should be applied in an undiluted form, but others can be worn on the skin if around 2-6 drops of essential oils are mixed with each tablespoon of carrier oil or water. Direct application may be used in the case of Tea Tree to banish spots and acne or lavender on the temples to get rid of a headache. Other oils can be diluted with water or a carrier oil, like Sweet Almond which can make a good massage oil.
Inhalation is another way which essential oils can be used. 2 drops of camomile or lavender oil on your pillow or on the front of your night clothes will help you to sleep. You can also add a couple of drops of eucalyptus, cedarwood or peppermint onto a handkerchief or tissue for help to clear nose congestion, or have a cotton wool ball with some drops of essential oil within the near vicinity.
Another method of inhaling essential oils is through steam inhalation. This is when some drops of essential oil are added to a bowl of steaming water which vaporises the oil. Placing a towel over your head and over the steaming water will allow for a stronger inhalation, but it can be very potent and you must be careful with eyes. Wearing swimming goggles prevents eyes from stinging. Diffusers allow for the safe inhalation of essential oils but again they must be diluted, and this can be done by placing a couple of drops of oil in some water. It is crucial not to burn the oil as this changes the chemical make up, making them less efficient. The water prevents this from happening.
A room spray can be created by diluting drops of essential oils in water which can then be sprayed for scent or set a mood. A solution based on ginger, cinnamon and citrus will create a Christmas fragrance ideal for the holiday season. All room sprays must be shaken thoroughly before using to prevent spraying just the water, as the oils will float on top.
Bathing in essential oils will apply them through both skin application and steam inhalation. Because oil floats on water and we want to avoid direct contact with skin, combining 4-10 drops of essential oil with a tablespoon of milk helps aid dispersion.
Essential oils must not be taken internally. They are unsafe to consume so should not be drank, diluted or not. Caution should also be taken when using essential oils on children. Children under 7 should not inhale the oils through steam inhalation, and children over 7 must wear goggles. In addition, when using any of the above methods for children under 10, quantities of the oils should be halved. If you are currently pregnant or suffering from serious medical conditions then seek advice from a professional Aromatherapist. Essential oils should be kept in a cool, dark place with the cap firmly in place. Keep out of the reach of children.

Essential Oils Uses

Essential Oils can positively affect every part of the body, as shown in the image. They are also used in some medications as well as in aromatic baths and massages and compresses. But perhaps more importantly, it provides medical alternatives to tranquilizers and other drugs commonly used to ease the tension. The doctors found that these oils, especially those related to the strong memories of smells, can lead to responses sedative to help you relax.

There are two types of oils: pure Oils, synthetic, or perfume. Synthetic oils can repeat the smell of fresh oil, are usually sufficient for most non-medical uses, such as massage and baths. But the various processes used to make synthetics are not repeated chemical compounds present in refined oils. They received their name from the belief that it contains the essence of the plant they came from.

There are 3 basic ways for the production of refined oils:

1. Enfleurage – Plant material, are usually placed on the flower blossoms cold layers of fat. Fat is slowly absorbed oil from the flowers. The length of this process varies with each manufacturer, but is accelerated when applying heat and pressure. Add the blossoms until completely saturated fat oil. This is called a mixture of fat and oil ointments. And then melts the fat with alcohol, leaving only the oil.

2. Steam distillation – Is passed through hot steam and more of the plant material. Evaporate the essential oils of plants.

3. Volatile solvents. – Volatile solvents, such as alcohol, mixed with plant material and the absorption of oil from this article.

Unlike a traditional bath or massage oils, essential oils are concentrated and require very special care when handling them. And some oils cause blisters if applied directly to the skin. Follow the directions on the bottle to find out how to deal with the individual oils safely. Also, if you have any allergies or sensitivities, or if you are pregnant, consult your doctor before use.

These gems oil facility light-sensitive, and should be kept in dark bottles to preserve their chemical composition. Bottles should also be well sealed to ensure that the oils do not evaporate.

Because of the high concentration, and when the bottle is empty you may be able to get out a little more by adding some carrier oil in the bottle to raise the residue left in the inside of the glass.

While you will have to add vinegar to the oil to get them to a mixture of water, you can add them directly to any massage or baby oil. To identify low-cost option, in addition to essential oils, canola oil is normal.

How Essential Oils Work

gold crownAromatherapy has been gaining a lot of popularity lately and more and more people are enjoying the perils of essential oils.  Essential Oils can truly  be a golden crown of your life! There are many skeptics out there but at the same time there are millions of people who swear about the beneficial effects of essential oils used in aromatherapy.

The way essential oils work is by stimulating the limbic system of our brain. Every oil has a different impact because every scent influences a different part of our brain. As a result of the impact on the limbic system essential oils give out benefits for different parts of our body.

The way essential oils are applied is through a massage. What happens then is that the oils are absorbed by the skin or inhaled. Then they travel through the blood stream reaching organs of the body.

It doesn’t take that long to feel the effects of the absorption. It usually takes anywhere between 20 minutes to a few hours. Once the oils have been applied to your body they will need to stay on your skin for a couple of hours just so the oils are fully absorbed and thus getting the most out of them.

How long a fragrance lasts also depends on the fragrance. Some last a couple of hours while others can last up to a whole day. Different aromatherapy oils last longer than others. For instance, eucalyptus, peppermint, thyme, and bergamot are examples of oils that don’t last that long. On the other hand, hyssop, lavender and balm essential oils can last up to 72 hours. Then there are oils like jasmine, sandalwood, ginger and cedar wood that can last for up to a week.

In order to know which oils to apply it is important to predetermine ones needs and requirements. Then again, if there are more than a few needs it is important to know how to combine the oils to give out desired effects.

Combinations of aromatherapy oils can be mixed to give a massage or even in the bathtub and thus relax and calm an individual. The healing and calming effects of essential oils are many. Make sure you do your research and find which ones are good for what you need.
